
Ebony Wood: These are almost certainly made from Ebony, the gold standard for fingerboards. It is used because it is incredibly dense, hard-wearing, and resistant to the natural oils and sweat from a player's hands.
Grade: The deep, uniform black color suggests a high-grade "A" or "AA" ebony. Lower-grade ebony often has brown or grey streaks (which are sometimes dyed black to match this look).
Unfinished State: These are "blanks." While they have the general tapered shape, they haven't been glued to a neck or "planed" (arched) to fit a specific violin yet.
